Alzheimer’s Portrayed on the Silver Screen

2007 cinema gave us a revealing look at Alzheimer's disease.
Academy Award winner Julie Christie won a Golden Globe Award for her role in Away From Her. The film, directed by actress Sarah Polley, stars Christie as Fiona, a woman slipping away to Alzheimer's and deals with how the disease affects her relationship with her husband of almost 50 years. Olympia Dukakis also co-stars in the film. Both Polley and Dukakis have collaborated with the Alzheimer’s Association by becoming Alzheimer Champions to raise awareness about Alzheimer's.
The Savages is another film tackling the issue of dementia. Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney play Jon and Wendy Savage, a brother and sister who must bring their father (Philip Bosco), who is suffering from dementia, across the country so he can move into a nursing home near where they live. Philip Seymour Hoffman was also nominated for a Golden Globe for his role in this movie.

Knowledge can be communicated, but wisdom cannot. A man can find it, he can live it, he can be filled and sustained by it, but he cannot utter or teach it.
